Underside of Residential Front Porch

This residential project focused on an often-overlooked area of the home—the underside of an elevated front porch.

Because the porch sits directly against the home, heat from the porch roof can transfer into the space below and toward the adjoining living area. The goal was to make the porch more comfortable while helping reduce unwanted heat transfer into the home.


Project Challenge / Design Obstacle:

  • The underside of the porch was open to the outside rather than enclosed.
  • Heat from the porch roof could transfer downward into the gathering space and toward the home.
  • The customer wanted the porch to be more comfortable for relaxing, entertaining, and outdoor gatherings.

Thermo-Guard Solution:

  • Applied closed-cell spray foam insulation to the underside of the residential porch.
  • Created a continuous insulated layer across the underside of the overhead structure.
  • The foam was installed directly beneath the porch roof to help slow heat transfer from the roof surface into the space below.

Results:

  • Helped reduce radiant and conductive heat transfer from the porch roof.
  • Created a more comfortable environment underneath the porch.
  • Made the space more enjoyable for gatherings, entertaining, and relaxing.
  • Added durable insulation to an area that is often left exposed and untreated.

Technical Note:

  • Closed-cell spray foam provides high insulation value per inch while also helping limit air movement and moisture intrusion.
  • For an open-sided porch, insulation cannot eliminate outdoor temperatures, but treating the underside of the roof can significantly reduce heat transfer from the overhead surface.
